Approximately 60 aspiring soccer players spent four nights "Kickin' It with the Mules" at the Solanco Soccer Camp.
Boys and girls entering kindergarten through sixth grade honed their skills June 24-27 under the direction of Solanco High coaches and players. "It's just a really great week for building relationships and rapport between the younger kids and the older kids," Solanco girls soccer coach Ken Yoder said. New Solanco girls soccer coach Ken Yoder has two major goals.
He is focusing on building the program and wants his team to enjoy playing soccer. The Solanco girls soccer team dropped a pair of games last week.
Garden Spot downed the Mules 6-2 last Thursday. Solanco took a 1-0 lead when Molly Briggs buried a free kick from 22 yards out. Pequea Valley tallied twice off corner kicks to defeat Solanco 2-0 in the girls soccer opener last Friday morning.
The host Mules controlled the ball for much of the game but were unable to score. Solanco coach Rob Bramble said he thought his team outplayed Pequea Valley for long stretches of the game. "I'm happy with the way the girls played," he said. "They passed the ball around well. Defensively we were fairly solid." The Solanco girls soccer team has shown signs of improvement during preseason training and coach Rob Bramble is hopeful the Mules can improve upon last year's two-win campaign.
Solanco has experience in goal. Emily Hobbs and Anna Shoemaker each saw time last season. "Both of them are decent goalkeepers and will see action," said Bramble. The Mules expect to play solid defense in front of their goalies. "We have a lot of good defenders," said Bramble. The Solanco girls soccer team earned its second win of the season before losing the season finale.
Manheim Central downed the Mules 2-0. "We had possession in their half but we missed some chances and it came back to hurt us," Solanco coach Rob Bramble said. "Overall there was some improvement in the girls' play." Solanco routed Lebanon 7-1 Tuesday, October 8. Rauna Curry-Saner tallied twice for the Mules and Megan Bleacher, Becca Trimble, Anna Shoemaker, Taylor Fabian, and Abby Yoder each added a goal. Shoemaker headed home a pass from Molly Briggs. Alexis Garnica made several nice passes which led to goals. Bramble is encouraged by the play of his mostly inexperienced squad. "I saw some improvement in the way we played and the competitiveness of our squad," the coach said. "The reality is most of our players are underclassmen and will be more experienced next year. I'm strongly encouraging them to play in offseason tournaments on travel teams or at some level. I think next year the improvement will be reflected more in games won." The Solanco girls soccer team suffered three setbacks last week.
Annville-Cleona edged the Mules 2-1 Saturday morning. The Solanco girls soccer team recorded its first victory of the season last week. The Mules mauled Lebanon 7-1 last Wednesday. Molly Briggs and Amanda Herr each tallied twice with one of Briggs' goals coming on a penalty. Rauna Curry-Saner, Taylor Fabian, and Gia Cannizzaro each added a goal. "They were runners up in the county last year. They pass the ball around very nicely." Anna Shoemaker scored the Mules goal off an assist from Rauna Saner-Curry. Saner-Curry made a nice run down the right side and played a cross in front of the goal and Shoemaker was in perfect position to convert. "It was an improvement over last year's games with Cocalico," Bramble said. "We had some other opportunities to score. It was good to be in position to score even if you don't always score." The coach praised the play of Shoemaker, Amanda Schneider, and Amanda Herr. The Mules managed to keep Cocalico off the scoreboard in the second half as both teams were able to use their reserves. "We played a little better in the second half," said Bramble. "And we got playing time for some of the other girls." Last Thursday's scheduled game with Garden Spot was postponed and will be played Tuesday, September 17. |
